What to Do When a PDF Made from Photos Is Too Large

Key points
  • First, use "Set a size limit" to fit the limit automatically
  • Reducing the number of pages is the most reliable fix
  • Don't lower quality too far; check that text is readable

You made a PDF from phone photos and the file is big, or it exceeds the recipient's size limit. Here are things you can try.

Why PDFs get large

Phone photos have many pixels, so even one photo is a large file. Combine several and the PDF grows accordingly. Unlike text documents, PDFs made from photos tend to be heavy.

Rough file size (actual size depends on your photos)
Small
Normal
High

What to do

1. Let "Set a size limit" adjust it automatically

In the quality section of the tool on this site, choose "Set a size limit" and pick the recipient's limit (1, 2, 5 or 10 MB). The tool keeps the quality as high as possible while fitting within that size. If a limit is set, this is the easiest first step.

2. Rebuild with "Small file" quality

In the tool on this site you can choose "Small file", "Normal" or "High" quality. "Small file" shrinks the photos before adding them, so the file gets smaller. Try this first.

3. Reduce the number of pages

Look for blank pages, retakes and pages you can do without. Cutting pages is the most reliable fix.

4. When retaking, don't shoot larger than needed

For text documents, a photo where the text is readable is enough. Getting extremely close or including a wide area adds wasted space.

5. Split into several files

If the recipient allows it, you can split the pages into two or more files. Check the recipient's rules first, such as "one file only".

Avoid lowering quality too far

Size limits differ between recipients. Check the limit you were given first, then adjust.
