Recommended Image Dimensions (px) by Use
Key points
- Phone photos are often larger than needed
- 800–2000px lightens most uses
- Keep document images large enough
Image size is expressed as the pixel (px) length of the long side.
Guidelines by use
- Pasting in email or sending in chat: 1200–1600px
- Posting on social media: 1200–2000px
- Blogs and websites: 1200–1600px (width)
- Submitting scanned documents: 2000px (readability first)
- Thumbnails and icons: 800px or less
How to think about it
For on-screen viewing, 2000px is plenty sharp. Beyond that the file mostly just grows.
Notes
- Over-shrinking document images makes text unreadable.
- Photos to be printed look better larger (2000px or more).
- Images are not enlarged; they never get bigger than the original.
