Choosing the Position and Style of Page Numbers
Key points
- If unsure, "Bottom center"
- For single- or double-sided printing, consider changing position
- Pick the style by what the reader needs
Choosing position
- Bottom center: the most common and suits most documents
- Bottom right: often used for horizontal-layout material and reports
- Bottom left: when you want it at the page-turning edge of a left-bound document
- Top center / top right: when the bottom has many notes or figures
Choosing style
- 1: when you want a clean look
- 1 / 10: when you also want to show the total pages
- - 1 -: for a calm look like papers or formal documents
Font size
A bit smaller than the body text is a good guide. Too large stands out; too small is unreadable.
Checking
Check the first and last pages to see that numbers don't overlap content.
