How to Write Education and Work History on a Japanese Resume
Key points
- Education usually starts from high school entrance
- Write school and company names in full
- End with 以上 on the right
Education and work history have many conventions, and it is easy to hesitate. Here are the basics.
Basic rules
- Keep the way you write years consistent. Use Western years throughout or Japanese era years throughout.
- Do not abbreviate school or company names. Write the formal name, not a short form.
- Include faculty and department.
- Write entry and graduation as separate lines.
Where to start education
Starting from high school entrance is common. Starting from junior high graduation is also fine.
Example
- April 2019: Entered ○○ Prefectural High School
- March 2022: Graduated from the same school
- April 2022: Entered ○○ University, Faculty of ○○
- March 2026: Expected to graduate from the same university
Work history
- Write the heading "職歴" on its own line.
- If you have none, write "なし" (none).
- Part-time jobs are often listed only if they relate closely to the job you are applying for or lasted a long time.
- Finish with 以上 ("that is all") on the right.
About expected graduation
If you have not graduated yet, write "expected to graduate" (卒業見込み).
