2-up, 4-up, 6-up or 9-up: Which Is Best? A Guide to Text Size
Key points
- 2-up: readable even for text-heavy documents
- 4-up: the standard for slides
- 9-up: only for an overview
The more pages you put on a sheet, the smaller each page becomes. Here is a guide to choosing.
Shrink guide
For a portrait A4 original with "Normal" margin, the approximate scale is shown below, with what 12 pt text becomes.
- 2-up (landscape sheet): about 64%. 12 pt becomes about 7.7 pt.
- 4-up: about 44%. 12 pt becomes about 5.3 pt.
- 6-up (landscape sheet): about 31%. 12 pt becomes about 3.7 pt.
- 8-up (landscape sheet): about 31%. 12 pt becomes about 3.7 pt.
- 9-up: about 29%. 12 pt becomes about 3.4 pt.
With portrait pages, going beyond 6 per sheet barely changes the page size. Landscape slides (such as 4:3) at 4-up come out at about 36%.
Choose by document type
- Text-heavy documents (reports, papers, handouts): 2-up at most.
- Slides: 4-up is the standard. 6-up works if the slides have large text.
- Just checking the overall flow: 6 to 9-up gives an overview.
When unsure
First do a test print of a few pages with 4-up. If it is hard to read, go to 2-up.
If the original text is large
Originals with large text (16 pt or more) stay readable even at 4-up. Try various settings in Combine PDF Pages onto One Sheet.
If your eyes get tired
Reading small text for long periods is tiring. For documents you will read at length, choose a more generous setting.
