Notes on Handling Transparent-Background Images (PNG to JPG)
Key points
- JPG doesn't support transparency, so it is filled with white
- Keep it PNG to preserve transparency
- A non-white background needs separate editing
You converted a logo with a transparent background to JPG and the background became white. That is by design.
Why
JPG can't represent transparency. During conversion, transparent areas are filled with white.
If you want to keep transparency
- If the recipient accepts PNG, keep it as PNG
- If only JPG is accepted, check that a white background is acceptable
If you want a non-white background
This tool can't change background color. Add a background in another image editor and then convert.
Cases where it changes appearance
- Logos with white text: they become unreadable on white
- Illustrations with shadows: the shadow blends into the white
Checking
View the converted image on a non-white background (such as dark mode) and check it is what you expected.
