Protecting Personal Data on Cards and Tags: What to Include and Who Gets Them
Key points
- Include only the information you need
- Think about who gets them and how widely
- Check that the tool does not send your data out
Cards and tags carry names and contact details. Once they leave your hands, you cannot tell where they end up.
Narrow down what you include
- Use only the information you need. A name and one way to contact you is usually enough.
- Leave off your address, phone number and date of birth unless there is a special reason.
Who gets them, and when
- Think about whether it is a good moment to give contact details to someone you just met.
- At events open to many people, it is safer not to include things like an email address.
For name tags
- A tag is seen by many people. Your name and group are often enough.
- Do not put extra information such as contact details in the list.
When disposing
- Do not just throw leftover cards or old tags in the bin; cut them up or shred them.
When using an online tool
- Check whether what you type is sent to a server. Tools that do may require sign-up or keep your data.
- Create Business Cards / Name Cards processes what you type only inside the browser on your device, with no sign-up. See the Privacy Policy for details.
On a shared computer
- Do not use the draft save.
- Delete the PDF from the computer when you are done.
Enter only your own details. Do not make cards that pose as another person or organization.
