Using Free Periods: Build a Study Plan from Your Timetable
Key points
- Find the free periods in your timetable
- Decide what to do in each slot
- Review it once a week
When you make a timetable, the free periods between classes become visible. How you use them changes how much room you have in the week.
Step 1: Find the free periods
Look at the timetable you made with Create a Timetable / Weekly Schedule. The white cells are free periods.
Step 2: Sort by length
- 90 minutes or more: reports, assignments, review, anything that needs a block
- 30 to 60 minutes: reading, preparation, memorizing
- 10 to 20 minutes: replying to email, vocabulary review, checking what to bring
Step 3: Decide what to do
Put a specific task in each free slot. Not "study" but something like "statistics report" helps you start without hesitation.
Step 4: Turn it into a weekly schedule
Switch to "By time of day" to see the whole week, including time outside class such as work, sleep and rest.
Tips to keep going
- Do not pack it too tightly. Leave some room.
- If a day goes wrong, do not try to make up for it all the next day.
- Review and adjust the sheet once a week.
Before exams
From one or two weeks before exams, switching free periods to review helps you avoid a last-minute rush. Check exam dates in your school's guide.
