Why Your Name Ends Up in a PDF Made from Word or PowerPoint
Key points
- Know how the author gets in
- Check the author in the PDF
- Remove it before submitting if needed
When you turn a document made in Word, PowerPoint or similar into a PDF, the author's name can end up inside the PDF, even when nothing about it is written on the pages.
Why it gets in
- Many programs record the name registered in the program as the "author" of the document.
- When you make a PDF, that author is carried over into the PDF.
- The document title, the name of the software used and the date and time it was made are stored too.
How to check
- Choose the PDF in View and Remove PDF Properties.
- Look at the Author, Title, Created with, Created and Modified fields.
- Check whether your real name, or the name of a school or company, is there.
How to remove it
- Choose "Remove everything".
- Tap "Create the PDF" and save.
When to check
- When you send work or data and do not want to show your real name.
- When a school or company name is in the author field.
- When the title of the source material has been carried over as it is.
Keep in mind
- Some recipients use the author name for verification. If there are rules, follow them.
- If a name is written in the text inside the PDF, this does not remove it.
Tools that go well with this
- Black Out (Redact) Parts of a PDF: Drag over the parts of a PDF you want to hide and black them out. Redacted pages become images, so the text underneath is gone.
- Compress PDF: Shrink a PDF to fit under a size you choose, for upload limits.
- Extract or Delete PDF Pages: Keep only the pages you need, or remove the pages you don't.
